Texas Couple Searches for Dog Lost Near Gainesville, Florida

A Texas family is looking for its dog that went missing in Florida's Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park after a bison knocked the dog and his owner into a canal.

Cindy and Doug Ashby issued a plea Feb. 3 on the Gainesville, Florida Pet Finder Facebook page.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Doug Ashby took Bear on a walk along the La Chua Trail while visiting Gainesville. He said a bison came onto the trail and knocked both he and his dog Bear into a canal. Ashby said he let the leash go and Bear, who was spooked, ran away.

The Ashbys told The Gainesville Sun that Bear is a 30-pound rescue dog that looks like a rat terrier.

Park manager David Jowers said the dog, who has been microchipped, was spotted on Monday in Boulware Springs Park. Since that time, there have been a number of sightings of Bear mentioned in the post on the Pet Finder Facebook page.

Cindy Ashby said Tuesday morning on Facebook they were continuing their search and putting out flyers until they had to leave to return to Texas later in the day.
