A new eatery dishing out foods with an Israeli and Middle Eastern flavor has opened in Fort Lauderdale.
“The Hummus House,” which opened in December 2017, serves Mediterranean salad, falafel, Moroccan spring rolls and of course, hummus. The vegetarian and vegan menu also includes grape leaves, roasted eggplant and Israeli salad, among other options.
The restaurant, located on 900 NE 20th Ave, was founded by Muli and Ellen Shalmi, a married couple from Israel, according to SouthFlorida.com. The couple used to own a traditional Israeli restaurant known for its grilled meats, but wanted to explore healthier options for the Hummus House, the website said.
“Our culture and background gives us a natural love for food. It inspired us to create a place where you can find traditional Israeli/Middle Eastern foods with a meatless twist,” the Hummus House website said.
According to the website, the “meatless meat” is completely plant based. The signature hummus is created from organic chickpeas.
Apart from savory appetizers and entrees, the Hummus House also offers frozen mint ginger lemonade, spring fruit juice and desserts like Malabi and Baklava.
Malabi is a rosewater pudding and Baklava is a flaky dough with honey and nuts, according to the website.
