The Odds of Winning Tonight's Powerball

It's all about luck, experts say

It's at $550 million dollars, and it may continue to grow. Wednesday's Powerball is the biggest in history, so what are odds of winning?

Jason Gershman, a math professor at Nova Southeastern University, said it doesn't matter if number 56 and 59 hit the most, or if 2 is hardly ever drawn. He said winning the Powerball is all luck.

"Playing 5 or 6 numbers in a row will not help you. Playing numbers in a pattern will not help you. Playing lucky numbers will not help you. But it may help you feel good," he said.

Employees at gas stations in Davie say they are swarmed with people buying tickets, and the sales are bringing in more than $6 million dollars an hour throughout the United States.

The most Powerball tickets are sold in Florida, and one financial expert says unfortunately, most people spend more money on lottery tickets than they win.

"It's not in your favor. You're 1,500 times more likely to die on the way to buy that actual ticket," Sebastian Guerra, a financial advisor in Miami.

We all know you're more likely to be struck by lightning, but you're also more likely to become an astronaut, president of the United States, and win an Academy Award.
