Theft Charge Dropped Against Ex-Miami Commissioner

Michelle Spence-Jones could try go get her post back

Prosecutors announced Tuesday they are abandoning a grand theft case against ex-Miami City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones.

Spence Jones, who was suspended by then-Gov. Charlie Crist in 2009 because of the arrest, will not be prosecuted on grand theft charges stemming from a $50,000 grant that prosecutors said the commissioner gave to her family's business and not the community group it was supposed to go to.

Earlier this year, Spence-Jones was acquitted of bribery charges for allegedly taking $25,000 from a developer.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said her office could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Spence-Jones schemed to take the grant money.

Richard Dunn replaced Spence-Jones as the representative for District 5, which includes Liberty City and Overtown.

Spence-Jones has not announced her political plans yet.
