Treasure Coast Father Fatally Shoots Son After Fight With Brother

What to Know

  • Martin County Sheriff’s Office officials say they received a call from the mother of the siblings just before 6 a.m. from their Stuart home.

A fight between brothers inside of a home on Florida’s Treasure Coast ended with the sibling’s father fatally shooting one of them.

According to NBC affiliate WPTV, Martin County Sheriff’s Office officials say they received a call from the mother of the siblings just before 6 a.m. Sunday from their Stuart home saying that one of the sons, 30-year-old Joseph Maloney, was acting irrationally.

Moments later, the mother called back and said the boy’s father – 56-year-old John Maloney – had shot Joseph multiple times following a fight with his 26-year-old brother James.

Joseph Maloney died as a result of his injuries.

According to investigators, the parents said the two sons had fighting over a game of pool and had been drinking for several hours before. During the fight, Joseph was choking his brother and holding a knife over his head according to police.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder says the father hasn't been charged because the shooting is considered an act of protecting his other son from great bodily harm or death.

The family told investigators Joseph Maloney had been under a great deal of stress from a 2015 DUI manslaughter case.
