Tropical Depression Nine Could Become Named Storm Tuesday, Drop Heavy Rains on Florida This Week

Rain is expected across the entire state of Florida over the next few days thanks to Tropical Depression 9 in the Gulf of Mexico.

The system, which could become a Tropical Storm, is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend region of North Florida on Thursday.

In South Florida, residents are likely to see heavy rainfall across the region, with at least one to two inches through Wednesday in both Miami and the Keys. Some areas could receive more, as the outer areas of the storm extend south.

T.D. 9 is also forcing changes on the sports front. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have moved their final preseason game from Thursday night to Wednesday in anticipation of the expected heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center says a hurricane hunter aircraft has been sent to investigate a tropical depression that's approaching the coast of North Carolina.

That storm's maximum sustained winds remain near 35 mph Tuesday morning but forecasters say it could also become a tropical storm later in the day. It was centered about 95 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and moving northwest near 6 mph.
