Tropical Storm Don Heads Toward Eastern Caribbean; Expected to Dissipate by End of Week

All eyes remain on Tropical Storm Don as it approached the Windward Islands on Tuesday and continues a move toward the eastern Caribbean after forming in the Atlantic Ocean – still thousands of miles away from Florida.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while a tropical storm watch was in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia and Bonaire.

As of 8 a.m., the storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was moving west at 18 mph early Tuesday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It was located about 250 miles east-southeast of Barbados.

The storm's center is expected to move through the Windward Islands and drop between two to four inches of rain through Wednesday morning.

An Air Force Reserve crew found the storm small and well-defined but not particularly well-organized. Don could intensify slightly before dropping in wind speed and is projected to dissipate by the end of the week.

At the same time, a second tropical wave in the Atlantic is also not expected to be of concern – as forecasters give it between a 20 and 30 percent chance of becoming a system but it’s not expected to hit any land before dissipating.
