2 Kids Shot While Playing on Miami Street

A teenager and a 10-year-old child were shot Tuesday afternoon while they were playing in the street on the 5700 block of NW 5th Avenue in Miami.

According to Miami Police, a vehicle drove up to a neighboring home and the driver went inside the house. The drive then came out of the house, pulled out a gun, and began to shoot in the direction of the kids.

"Some words were exchanged and the juveniles tried to disperse quickly because no one knew what was going on until shots were fired," said Officer Frederica Burden of Miami Police. "So they were trying to find cover as soon as possible."

Police said the kids ran in different directions, but the two who were shot ran behind each other into their home. Miami Police said once the two victims aged 17 and 10 were in the home; the gunman came to the door and continued to shoot into the house before running from the scene.

The teen was later identified as James Leak, 17, and the younger child is Ekari Fussel, 10. Leak was reportedly shot multiple times.

"I am tired of these kids thinking everything can be solved with guns," said Stephanie Symonette,  Fussell's aunt. "They have got to come up with a new solution, because this is taking a toll on my family."

Miami Police said both victims were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Leak was taken to surgery due to his wounds.
