‘Devastating': Two Children – Aged 5 and 9 – Shot in Florida City

What to Know

  • The children were playing outside of their home in Florida City when the shooting occurred.
  • The children underwent surgery and are expected to recover.

The Florida City Police Department said two children were shot and airlifted to the hospital on Thursday.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. in the 600 block of Northwest 12th Street.

The children were taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center. Their grandmother said the children were in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

The children were identified as 9-year-old Treasure Clark and 5-year-old Eric Wright, who family members said are brother and sister.

Tadarius Bell, a brother, said they heard shots from "every angle" as they were playing outside in their yard.

"I wanted to break down and cry and get on my knees and trying to pray and pray and pray and pray all day, all day and night and now me, I can't rest, every time I close my eyes I just hear and see the same image fly back," Bell said.

Police are trying to find whoever pulled the trigger.

"Devastating to know that yet again children in our community, who should be looking forward to summer break, instead have become victims of a shooting. My prayers are with these children and their families," Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said in a statement.
