Driver Reaching for Phone Kills 2 Horses, Injures Riders in Southwest Ranches

Police say a man was reaching for his cellphone when he struck and killed two horses and seriously injured a young girl and a woman in Southwest Ranches Sunday.

According to officials, two people, 62-year-old Joy Shupnick and a 9-year-old girl, were riding horses on Griffin Road at Southwest 198th Terrace when they were struck by a truck.

Both riders suffered life threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital. Both horses died on the scene.

The driver of the truck, identified as 24-year-old James Frederick Rink, wasn't injured.

"He said that he dropped his cell phone, was distracted for a brief period of time and struck the two horses," Davie Police Sgt. Mark Leone said.

Police haven't charged the driver but the incident remains under investigation.
