Two Suspects Shot By Police in Hialeah

Police open fire after suspects ram officer's car during traffic stop

Hialeah Police say they were forced to open fire on two suspects after they tried to ram officers with their car during a traffic stop Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. in the area of West 29th Street and 12th Avenue where officers tried to pull a white Cadillac Escalade over after receiving a tip that the men were about to pull off an armed robbery.

Police say the vehicle wouldn't stop, and slammed into several cars, including a police car.

"Once officers began to attempt to stop that vehicle, the subject began to flee from police, ramming police vehicles and eventually ramming one police vehicle so hard that his own vehicle was disabled, he loses control and crashes against a pole," Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez said.

Officers opened fire, hitting the two suspects, who were identified as Elvis Abreu, 25, and Dwight Charles Patterson, 23. They both face charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault with a vehicle. Both were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The officer whose car was rammed was also hospitalized but is expected to be OK, Rodriguez said.
