U.S. Coast Guard Repatriates 121 Cuban Migrants

After nine separate interdictions at sea in the south Florida Straits, the U.S. Coast Guard announces that they've repatriated 121 Cuban migrants back to Cuba within the past week.

All of the individuals were attempting to enter the United States illegally on dangerous, unseaworthy vessels referred to as "rustics" or "chugs."

Once aboard the Coast Guard cutter ships, all of the individuals received medical attention, food, water and shelter.

"Despite the recent steps to begin normalizing ties with Cuba, the Coast Guard's missions and operations in the southeast remain unchanged," said Capt. Mark Fedor of the USCG in a release. "Our immigration policies remain the same, and we continue to strongly discourage those attempting to illegally enter the country by taking to the sea. There are legal ways to enter this country and this is not it."

Since last October, an estimated 4,308 Cubans have attempted to illegally enter the U.S. by sea.
