USS Cole Docks at Port Everglades

Ship targeted in Yemen terrorist attack lets sailors off for shore leave in South Florida

A Navy ship that was the target of a terrorist attack in 2000 has arrived in South Florida for shore leave.

The USS Cole docked at Port Everglades on Thursday morning as local residents lined the inlet leading into the docks.

The sailors on board will be in South Florida for the next three days and will be guests at the Miami Dolphins preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday.

In 2000, a boat filled with explosive rammed the USS Cole while it was in Yemen. The explosion killed 17 sailors and left a hole in the destroyer that took 18 months and $250 million to fix.
