Uber Returns to Broward County

Starting bright and early Thursday morning, Uber was back in Broward County.

Broward County Commissioners voted 6-2 for new, looser regulations during a Tuesday meeting.
Commissioners had previously pushed for more thorough background checks for drivers conducted by the county and commercial insurance.

The request forced Uber to cease all operations in July as the company said the new rules raised substantial barriers for their drivers, making it impossible for them to operate in the county.

The looser rules are a compromise to allow for Uber to operate in Broward, while ensuring vehicle maintenance and customer safety.

The new regulations call for more basic background checks and allow for drivers follow state law on insurance.

Both Uber drivers and customers alike have waited tirelessly for this compromise, telling NBC 6 that it arrived just in time.

"I'm just thrilled. I'm just thrilled to be back. I'm like ready to do back-flips down the street," said Cheryl Purchase, Uber driver.

In a statement, Uber said they "couldn't be more excited to call Broward home again."

Uber currently has operations in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

Several Broward County bars and restaurants planned to host happy hour specials Thursday in honor of Uber's return.
