Underwater Races Coming to Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach hosting underwater races to boost economy

Some South Floridians are taking speed to places it hasn't gone before, mainly underwater.

In what tourism officials say is a great opportunity to show that the oil is not in South Florida, an underwater race will be held Sunday in Pompano Beach.

Called the Gold Coast Underwater Grand Prix, racers using a high tech scooter made right here in South Florida, will speed around a wreck, while scuba divers watch.

"This time, with the economy this way, we want to show that the waters off South Florida don't have oil and the beaches are open," said Jeff Green, from the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce.

"We are going to have a spectator boat and they can see it off the Tracy wreck," said Jeff Torode, of South Florida Diving Headquarters.

The Pegasus thruster, the machine that will propel the races, is made right here in South Florida. They run from about 25 minutes on a continuous run.

One racer is a military veteran who lost a limb.

The race Sunday afternoon is just part of a weekend of events for divers taking place in Pompano.

Race organizers say its a new way to attract visitors to the area from around the country, which is good for Broward's economy.
