Van Driver Charged in Abandoned Tot's Death

Aggravated manslaughter charge for Delray Beach daycare driver

The Delray Beach daycare driver who allegedly left a young girl in the back of a hot van for several hours has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, police said.

Amanda Inman, 31, turned herself in to the Palm Beach County jail Monday afternoon after a warrant had been issued for her arrest Friday.

Inman was driving the Katie's Kids Learning Center van on the morning of Aug. 5, where 2-year-old Haile Brockington was found dead after she was left unattended in the back seat for over six hours.

Brockington was one of 14 kids picked up that morning around 9 a.m. But no one at Katie's Kids knew she was left in the back seat of the van until another child noticed her around 4:15 p.m.

The child told Inman that Brockington was "slobbering on the seat." The center called 911, but by the time rescue workers arrived, it was too late. The cause of death was later determined to be systemic hyperthermia.

According to a police report, Inman had even moved the van after unloading all the other children, but still didn't notice Brockington. Another Katie's Kids worker who helped unload the van didn't notice the young girl either.

Brockington's family has filed a civil lawsuit against Katie's Kids and its owners, as well as Inman, who was fired shortly after the girl's death. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for pain and suffering and medical and funeral expenses.

Inman, of Boynton Beach, is being held in a Palm Beach jail without bond.
