A Sunrise man used his position as a Voodoo priest to have sex with multiple women and an underage girl, telling them they were cursed or had "bad spirits" and needed to be cleansed, police said.
Brogenet Cinor, 48, was arrested June 19 on a charge of sexual battery of a child under 12, according to a Sunrise Police arrest report obtained Thursday.
Cinor was later released on bond and it was unknown if he's hired an attorney. At his home Thursday, someone sprayed a hose at an NBC 6 reporter who was seeking comment.
According to the report, the incident happened between 2009 and 2010, but wasn't reported until this past September.
The young girl had been brought to meet with Cinor, who took her to a man-made structure in his backyard, where he had sex with her, the report said. After having sex, he took out his wallet and gave her money, the report said.
When Cinor was confronted about the incident a couple weeks later by the girl's mother, he denied having sex with the girl but said she would be cursed and would die if she mentioned it to anyone else, the report said.
"He was using the girls beliefs in voodoo and curses and the fact that they believed up to death that they could die if they did not follow his intsructions," Officer Cindi McCue of Sunrise Police said in a press conference Friday.
It wasn't until the girl's father found out about the alleged incident in September that the family reported it to police.
Police said the girl's mother had gone to Cinor for a spiritual reading, and they prayed by candlelight and had two liquid potion treatments, the report said. Cinor told the woman her daughter had bad spirits inside of her and needed to be cleansed, the report said.
The mother strongly believes in Haitian Voodoo and is still in fear of what Cinor may do to her, the report said.
As detectives investigated the case, they found two adult women with similar stories of encounters with Cinor after they had gone to him for spiritual guidance.
One woman claimed Cinor said he needed to treat her "because she was being plagued by evil spirits," the report said. Cinor had sex with her in the backyard shed, then told her she would die if she didn't continue to see him romantically, the report said.
The woman had sex with Cinor on multiple occasions and she became pregnant, the report said. Cinor took her to a clinic in Tamarac where he paid to have her terminate the pregnancy, the report said.
The second woman who had sex with Cinor was also told she would die. She also became pregnant and Cinor paid to terminate the pregnancy, the report said. Her also told she would die if he told anyone of the relationship, according to the report.
"He used sex as his way of 'cleansing' the so called spirits," the report noted. "In addition Brogenet used threats of Voodoo to inhibit them from telling anyone of their relationships."
Sunrise Police are expected to give more information Friday and are hoping to identify possible additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
