Weekend Planner: Calle Ocho, Conservation and Cinema

From Calle Ocho to St. Patrick's Day kickoff events, there's plenty to do in South Florida this weekend. Read on for events going on around the community. 

CALLE OCHO

The largest Hispanic festival in the nation returns to Miami this weekend. The annual celebration in Little Havana will feature 12 musical stages, international food, dancing and 20 blocks of entertainment. The event takes place on March 11 at 1400 SW 1st Street. MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL

The 2018 Miami International Film Festival kicks off Friday night and will end on Sunday, March 18. The event showcases the work of local and international artists and brings “the best of world cinema to Miami.” According to the website, the event was founded by the non-profit Film Society of Miami. Donations to the event will be matched by Miami Film Society. For ticket information and more details, click here

INVISIBLE WOMAN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, a photography display featuring the work of select women photographers will be showcased in Doral. The exhibit, called “The Invisible Woman,” will be presented by ConcreteSpace Art Projects on March 10. The exhibit is curated by Carol Damian, a former director of the Frost Art Museum at Florida International University and art historian. The display is available for the public to view from Monday through Saturday, from March 10 to May 2. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at ConcreteSpace, located at 3400 NW 78th Ave. in Doral.

ST. PATRICK’S PARADE AND FESTIVAL

St. Patrick’s Day may be on March 17, but in Fort Lauderdale, the town will be “painted green” on March 10. The family-friendly event that will celebrate “all things Irish” will include floats, marching bands, bag pipers and more. There will also be a four-mile Shamrock Run that starts at 7:30 a.m. at Huizenga Plaza. The parade will take place along on Las Olas Boulevard. For more information click here. 

BROWARD WATER MATTERS DAY

 The 16th annual Broward Water Matters Day is scheduled for March 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The water conservation event will feature giveaways, raffles, interactive booths, face-painting and many more activities aimed at protecting the valuable resource. New this year is the lionfish and seafood sustainability presentation, put on by Whole Foods and the Reef and Environmental Education Foundation. There will be giveaways of ceviche and celebrations with lionfish. The event will take place at Tree Top Parks in Davie. For more information, click here.
