This feel-good gesture may make you feel better about paying $6 a pound for tomatoes next time you head to Whole Foods.
The national health food store chain is footing the bill for an extra penny per pound of everyone's favorite red fruit (or is it a vegetable???) that the Coalition of Immokalee Workers will pass on to tomato pickers in Florida, namely Lady Moon Farms and Alderman Farms.
Because of the increase, now Florida pickers can potentially double their earnings, which are currently, on average, $12 an hour.
Other food establishments the CIW has succeeded in bringing on board for the penny-per-pound program include Taco Bell, Burger King, and McDonald's.
The one chain the CIW hasn't been able to entice over to the light side is Chipotle, which has been tsk tsked for responding with a snubby "thanks, but no thanks."
C'mon, Chipotle, your burritos are overpriced as it is, what's a few more cents?
