Woman Beat Boy With Sack of Potatoes: Deputies

A central Florida woman is facing charges after authorities say she hit a 12-year-old boy repeatedly with a sack of potatoes.

Rachel Salters, 46, is charged with child abuse without great harm and destroying or tampering with physical evidence following her arrest Wednesday at an Orange City home, according to a Volusia County Sheriff's Office report.

Salters remained behind bars without bond Thursday, jail records showed. It was unknown if she has an attorney.

According to the report, the boy had asked Salters to make him dinner when they got into an argument. The argument led to her "picking up a full bag of potatoes and begin swinging it at him," the report said.

The child ran away and tried to hide in a bathroom, but Salters kicked the door until it broke open and then hit the boy in the head with the bag of potatoes, the report said.

When the bag broke open, Salters started throwing potatoes at the boy, according to the report. The child wasn't physically injured.

After a deputy responded, Salters moved a potato from the bathroom into the kitchen after the deputy told her not to touch anything, the report said.

"I didn't hit him with the potato, I only threw it at him!" Salters said, according to the report.
