Woman Cancels Miami Uber, Sexually Battered by Stranger Who Gave Her Ride: Police

A woman who canceled her Uber to accept a ride to Miami Beach from a stranger says she was sexually battered by the man, who is now facing charges, police said.

Darwin X. Taipe, 39, was arrested Tuesday on a sexual battery charge, according to an arrest report.

According to the report, the alleged victim had been at the E11even nightclub on Northeast 11th Street in Miami when she decided to leave and requested an Uber.

The woman, who the report said was inebriated, went outside the club where she was approached by Taipe, who offered her a ride to Miami Beach. When she looked into his car she noticed his cell phone attached to his dashboard that had the Uber app, the report said.

She accepted the ride and canceled her Uber, then got into the front seat of Taipe's car, the report said. He started driving toward Miami Beach and she fell asleep.

The woman said when she woke up, Taipe was sexually battering her, the report said. She became angry and started taking his picture as he fled the scene, the report said. She then went into the building where she was staying on Miami Beach and asked for the police to be called.

Police said one of the woman's photos captured Taipe's license plate, and he was later arrested. He refused to speak with detectives without an attorney, the report said.

Uber officials confirmed to NBC 6 that Taipe is not an active Uber driver. Taipe was booked into jail and later released on $10,000 bond, records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
