The driver prosecutors believe was behind the wheel during a fatal hit-and-run crash on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale last month has been located, NBC 6 has learned.
Police say 58-year-old Miguel Soler, who was visiting from New Jersey, died shortly after his wife took a photo of him on a bridge on Las Olas back on July 1. Vivian Soler and police said the driver kept going, and the SUV was located a distance away from the scene.
On Friday, Ross Weiner, an assistant state attorney in the Broward State Attorney's Office, told the family's lawyer that he has filed charges against 25-year-old Broward resident Regina Ann Goodrich.
Weiner states that he filed one count of leaving the scene of a crash with a death, which is a first-degree felony. Goodrich is scheduled to surrender next week and will have to make a court appearance.
Robert Pelier, the attorney for Vivian Soler, expressed relief that Ms. Goodrich is being charged.
"Her leaving the scene of the accident was an inexcusable, unacceptable, grotesque disregard for human life," Pelier said in a phone interview with NBC 6 Friday.
NBC 6 could not reach Goodrich, whose last address in court records is listed in Coral Springs, for comment.
