Woman Dies From Injuries Sustained in Apartment Fire: MFR

Miami Fire Rescue responded to a fire at an apartment complex Tuesday evening that left one woman dead.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. in a second-story apartment in the 600 block of Northeast 24th Street.

A woman in her 60s was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burns. She later died from her injuries at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her name has not been released.

"It's very, very sad that you just start 2016 and to receive this type of news is very sad," said Eva Jones, neighbor.

Crews said the fire was contained to the victim's apartment and no other units were impacted.

"A big concern was if we had a fire that could possibly spread to other units and then not knowing how many other victims you may have," said Iggy Carroll with MFR.

When crews arrived, some residents were already evacuated. Firefighters noticed smoke coming from the victim's apartment and broke inside.

"We understand that this woman was there by herself at the time of the fire," Carroll said.

It's unclear what started the fire, but the Fire Marshal said it may have started in a bedroom or the hallway.

No other injuries were reported.
