Woman Stole Thousands From Driftwood Middle School Band Fund: Hollywood Police

A Hollywood woman is facing a grand theft charge after police say she stole thousands from a middle school's band fund.

Elizabeth Monzon, 35, was arrested Wednesday in the theft of $3,533 from the Driftwood Middle School Band Patron's Association, according to an arrest report.

Monzon was booked into the Broward jail and later released on $1,000 bond. It was unknown if she's hired an attorney.

According to the arrest report, Monzon had volunteered for the BPA as advisor president last August. The BPA is a non-profit that helps support and promote band students at the school.

As part of her duties, Monzon was responsible for fund raising activities and accounting for that money. She also had access to the BPA's bank account.

At one point Monzon opened an unauthorized debit card linked to the account, then began making unauthorized purchases and withdrawals, the report said.

Monzon later confessed to withdrawing the money, and said she'd even paid her Comcast bill through the account, the report said. Monzon said she meant to pay back the money and she made two deposits of $500, but not until association members became suspicious, the report said.

"The most offensive aspect of this crime is that Monzon took money from the association meant to protect and provide for the children's musical education and activities," the report said.
