Women Stole Using Homemade Anti-Shop Lifting Devices

Women had their own anti-shoplifting devices

Two Miami women allegedly used a store's anti-shop lifting controls against them to steal more than $2,000 worth of clothes earlier this week.

Iris Espinosa, 54, and 61-year-old Norma Velazquez were arrested for shoplifting at the Bloomingdales in Boca Raton after employees caught the women walking out of the store with clothes they had put on in the dressing room.

Usually, tags on the clothes would immediately notify the store someone was walking out with unpaid merchandise, but the women had created a homemade "anti-shop lifting" device to remove the tags, police said.

After removing the tags, the women put on the new clothes and then threw on the clothes they originally walked into the store with. The added bulk didn't go unnoticed by employees, who quickly detained the women until police came.

Both women were charged with retail theft, organized scheme to defraud and possession and use of anti-shoplifting devices. A Palm Beachjudge set their bail at $3,000 on Thursday.
