Worker Rescued After Spending Hours in Hole

A worker at a Tampa Bay area construction site has been rescued after spending several hours stuck in a 10-foot-deep hole.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue reports that it responded to the Apollo Beach subdivision Thursday afternoon. The trapped man was part of a crew that had been working on irrigation piping, and the ground gave way as he was working in the hole.

The man became stuck up to about his waist around 3 p.m. Rescuers used a harness to keep him from sinking farther into the ground, while removing water and dirt from the hole.

The man was eventually freed just before 6 p.m. He was taken to a hospital, but his condition wasn't immediately known.

Officials say the hole was dug as part of the irrigation work. It was not a sinkhole.
