Zoo Miami's Sumatran Tiger Cub Debuts

The highly endangered Sumatran tiger cub that was born last November at Zoo Miami is officially ready for his close up!

The cub was brought out into his exhibit for his afternoon feeding and allowed to do some "exploring" Tuesday afternoon.

Since his birth, the cub has been kept in isolation with his mother, 4-year-old Leelo, in order to establish a strong mother-son bond.

Zoo Miami staff members also kept a distance from mother and cub to allow them their much-needed bonding time.

The birth of the tiger cub marked the first Sumatran tiger birth at Zoo Miami, and only the fourth in the United States this year.

Currently, there are only 70 Sumatran tigers living in U.S. zoos.

Researchers believe there are fewer than 500 of the endangered Sumatran tigers left in the wild.
