An alleged bank robber in Central Florida found himself behind bars Thursday afternoon – but not before making quite the scene as he threw some of the money police say he just stole out the car window during a police chase.

NBC affiliate WFLA-TV reported that the man was caught within minutes of the robbery inside a Clearwater bank just before 4 p.m. Witnesses told the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office that the man, later identified as 37-year-old DeWayne Walters, had a gun and jumped over the counter inside, demanding money before fleeing the scene.

Deputies say that as dye packs inside the bags of money began to exploded, Walters started throwing the cash out of the car – with police later having to go back and pick it up as evidence.

The car Walters was driving later crashed into several other vehicles, including a police vehicle, before he fled into a nearby apartment complex and was later caught.

No one inside the bank was hurt and police did not say how much money was taken. Walters was charged with several counts, including armed robbery and fleeing law enforcement.
