Alvarez Exits Early in Sixth Straight Loss For Miami

Henderson Alvarez was forced to leave in the third inning after a ball hit him in his shin

The Miami Marlins continued to struggle on Saturday as they dropped their sixth straight game in a 5-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Besides losing the game, the Marlins also lost their ace Henderson Alvarez in the third inning. A ball hit back to the mound nailed Alvarez in the shin and he limped off the field. The team listed him as day-to-day with a shin contusion and he could make his next start.

Before exiting, Alvarez gave up one earned run on three hits in 2.2 innings. Due to the fact he left with the Marlins already behind, Alvarez was tagged with his fifth loss of the year. The All-Star still has a sparkling E.R.A at 2.64.

With Alvarez out of the game early, manager Mike Redmond had to scramble to find an arm to bring in. Sam Dyson was the choice and he did an admirable job of saving the bullpen. Dyson threw 70 pitches over 3.1 innings. The Giants did get to Dyson for three runs on four hits but his effort could pay dividends if the pen is needed on Sunday.

Chris Hatcher, Dan Jennings and A.J. Ramos also each worked an inning to round out the pitching side for Miami. The three relievers all did so with scoreless efforts.

The Marlins attempted to come from behind in the ninth inning while trailing by four runs. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 23rd home run of the year to start the inning the second blast in two days for the slugger. After a Marcell Ozuna double, Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled to bring him home and cut the deficit to two. Adeiny Hechavarria followed and flew out to the end the game.

The Marlins will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday when Brad Hand takes the mound.
