Amber Alert Issued for 21-Month-Old Boy in Jacksonville

Jacksonville Police are searching for a 21-month-old boy who they say was taken during a car theft at an apartment complex.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Lonzie Barton was in a car belonging to his mother's boyfriend around 2:20 a.m. Friday. The vehicle, a 1995 Honda Civic, was recovered several blocks away but the child was not inside.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an Amber Alert for the boy early Friday.

According to the sheriff's office, the mother's boyfriend went into an apartment to get something and when he returned the car and child were missing. They say the child was wearing only a diaper when he was taken.

The boy's 5-year-old sister was able to get out of the car and alert the boyfriend. They were on their way to pick up the children's mother who was getting off work from her job at a restaurant.

Sheriff's office officials said that they've contacted the child's father in nearby Baker County and he does not have the child.

Chief Tom Hackney said they are searching nearby areas because it's possible the boy could have also left the car before it was taken. They've also asked residents to check yards and vacant lots in the area. Investigators are asking area businesses to check surveillance videos for any possible clues.

Sheriff's officials are asking anyone with information about the boy to contact them.

No further details were immediately available.
