A loving dog owner is mourning her poodle after it was killed by a robber armed with a sledgehammer Friday night in Lauderhill.
Two bystanders spotted a man smashing the windows of a woman's car when they got entangled in what police say was a domestic dispute in the area of NW 7th Street and 34th Avenue.
A bystander's year-old poodle, Summer, started barking at the suspect.
The man took his sledgehammer, and with one blow, killed the dog.
"My heart is aching ... she was very brave, she was there to protect me," said the owner, who did not wish to be identified.
The owner's friend took out her cellphone and started to record the suspect. He threatened her with the sledgehammer, took her phone and ran off, police said.
The Lauderhill Police Department on Saturday identified the suspect as 32-year-old Darrien Green, who is considered armed and dangerous. Green faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated animal cruelty and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
