Atlas V Rocket Spotted in Skies Over South Florida After Launch

What to Know

  • Atlas V has made 79 previous launches since its first in 2002, with the last one coming in October 2018.

Residents across South Florida saw quite the sight in the skies early Thursday morning as the Atlas V Rocket could be seen shortly after its launch from Cape Canaveral.

The reported $1.1 billion high frequency satellite launched just after 6 a.m. and could be seen several hundred miles – something that concerned some residents in Broward and Miami-Dade, but for the most part everyone knew everything was okay.

"It's funny because I feel like all these things typically happen more up north because of Cape Canaveral and all that stuff," said Kristin Perera, who watched from her Miami home. "So I was surprised to hear that it reached this far south."
