Armed Robbery Suspect Shot and Killed By Homeowner in Pompano Beach

Suspect killed with own gun, authorities search for vehicle witnesses saw left the scene

A homeowner shot and killed an armed robber with the suspect's own gun in Pompano Beach early Tuesday, officials said.

The shooting happened around 5:15 a.m. at the Conch Key Villas in the 400 block of Northeast 1st Street, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

According to the BSO, the homeowner was just getting home when he spotted the suspect and was somehow able to take his gun away.

"It was 5:15, it's dark, he arrives home, he's near his garage and he sees a man with a gun," BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said. "There's some struggle that ensues and he's able to take the gun from this man and he shoots him."

The suspect, who wasn't identified, was killed at the scene. The homeowner is cooperating with authorities.

β€œVery great guy," Justin Polnac said of the homeowner. "Nothing, I can't really say anything bad about him. Just a very friendly neighbor.”

BSO officials searched the area with a helicopter and K-9 after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leave the scene. Officials had asked residents to avoid the immediate area and report suspicious persons or activity to 911.

The car is described as a black, newer model Nissan, Mazda or Acura.

Detectives were looking at security footage for more answers, and to see if the deceased suspect had an accomplice, the BSO said.
