Authorities Urge Boaters to Slow Down on New Year's Eve

The Coast Guard is urging boaters to slow down after New Year's Eve fireworks in popular Miami-Dade County waters.

The Coast Guard has established a "regulated navigation area" from 11 p.m. Dec. 31 through 1 a.m. Jan. 1 in Biscayne Bay waters. Speeds will be restricted to 15 knots or less.

Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press tells The Miami Herald that authorities will be prepared to arrest drunken or reckless boaters. The Coast Guard and state wildlife authorities also will patrolling South Florida's waters.

There have been eight boating fatalities in the county this year, including four victims who died July 4.
