Baby Found Dead in Freezer at Homestead Home: MDPD

Authorities are investigating an incident involving a baby found deceased in a freezer in Homestead.

On Jan. 17, Miami-Dade Police said the Monroe County Sheriff's Office made contact with a woman attempting to kill herself.

Monroe officials said the woman was found in the parking area of the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon.

Miami-Dade Police later identified her as Paula Vargas Ortiz. She is at Jackson Memorial Hospital, believed to be mentally unstable.

Authorities said Ortiz gave conflicting stories about the well-being of her child, including one in which she said she threw the baby over the bridge and into the water. The Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife crews conducted a search as a precaution.

Ortiz then told officers her baby was in the freezer at her Homestead home.

Investigators immediately responded to the Isles at Oasis in the 2400 block of Northeast 3rd Court and found the baby dead in the freezer.

The cause and manner of death are pending. Police said no charges will be filed until autopsy results are completed by the Medical Examiner.

The baby has been identified as five-month-old Hugo Alvarez Vargas.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is also assisting in the investigation. They believe no other children are involved in this case.
