2 Suspects in Bay Harbor Islands Home Burglary Arrested

Two suspects who are accused of stealing $80,000 in jewelry from a Bay Harbor Islands home in a heist caught on camera were captured in New York.

Jorge Tobar, 32, and Rodrigo Astete, 28, both Chilean nationals, were caught Saturday in New York City after authorities were alerted that they were trying to flee the country.

"They came into our city and they stole bracelets, and soon they'll be back in Miami Dade wearing our bracelets," said Bay Harbor Islands Police Chief Sean Hemingway.

With the help of surveillance cameras and tips, cops followed a lead tracking one suspect's car to New York. On Saturday night, ICE, NYPD and Port Authority police all assisted in arresting Tobar and then Astete at a nearby hotel in Queens.

The high-end burglars were caught on surveillance video over Labor Day weekend using a crowbar to pry open the back sliding glass door of a Bay Harbor Islands home. They got away with some pricey and sentimental accessories.

"(The victims) are actually a newlywed couple," Hemingway said. "It was her wedding ring so I took that a little personal, so we're doing everything we can to get that back."

Some items were recovered, but authorities are looking to see where they reportedly sold some of the jewelry in Miami. Cops are still searching for a third suspect.

"Here, one crime is too many. I say that often and the message is if you're gonna come here, we're gonna resort to no expense to catch you," Hemingway said.
