Bill in Florida House Would Allow Concealed Carry of Guns on Grounds of Private Religious Schools

A bill being considered by the Florida House could allow those with concealed carry permits to bring their gun into private schools across the state.

HB 849, sponsored by Rep. Neil Combee, would allow private religious schools across the state to decide if they want to allow people to carry guns on schools grounds, just like a private business. The Polk County Republican says many of the schools do not have security from law enforcement inside due to the costs.

Under current law, churches with schools attached are prohibited from having guns on their property even when the school isn’t in session. If the bill passes, it would not require any additional licensing for a person to be able to carry their weapon.

The bill currently remains in the House Judiciary Committee and has not been scheduled for a vote at this time.
