Blood Drives Being Held in Honor of South Dade High School Principal

Several blood drives are being held in honor of the South Dade High School principal who was struck by an SUV at his son's little league game.

Javier Perez was seriously injured while coaching his 5-year-old son's team at Tamiami Park last week when the driver lost control and rammed into him.

Perez remains at Kendall Regional Medical Center. He has undergone multiple surgeries to save his life.

The Perez family is asking people to donate blood in his honor with drives on Friday and Saturday. Dozens came out Friday in support of the cause.

"He was able to help me and my family out when we went through tough times with my mother's health so I thought it would be the best chance to repay him for that," student Shane Ayala said.

"We saw it on the news last week, saw it last night, everybody giving blood over at the hospital and they said they were going to be here so here I am, first in line," Bob Mueller said.

Here is the blood donation schedule and locations:

Friday:

South Dade Senior High between 12 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Ronald Reagan Senior High between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Saturday:

Kendall Regional Medical Center between 12 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Perez and his family with medical expenses.
