The Board of Trustees at Florida International University is backing the school's president by approving a one-year contract extension, months after a bridge under construction collapsed and killed six people.

Mark Rosenberg is currently serving his second five-year term at the university in Miami. The Miami Herald reports the measure approved Wednesday must still go before the state's Board of Governors later this month.

The pedestrian bridge collapsed March 15, bringing the university a barrage of publicity. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the collapse, which killed an FIU student.

Last month, the board approved a full performance bonus for Rosenberg based on his work during the 2016-17 school year. His base salary of $502,578 will remain fixed.
