‘Person of Interest' Detained After Newborn Found in Boca Raton Dumpster

Authorities have detained a "person of interest" one day after a newborn baby girl was found alive in a dumpster in Boca Raton.

The announcement comes as Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office officials released more details about the baby. She weights 6 pounds, 8 ounces and is either African-American or Hispanic. She was likely born on Wednesday or Tuesday and her umbilical cord was still attached, officials said.

A lieutenant with the sheriff's office said the baby is "cute as a button."

Officials said Thursday evening that the person of interest will be taken to a hospital for medical clearance. Once she is cleared, she will be interviewed by detectives, officials said. PBSO did not provide further details.

Authorities said the baby was found by two people who were walking near an apartment complex along Boca Entrada Boulevard around 9 a.m. Tuesday when they heard what sounded like a baby crying. The girl was taken to a local hospital to get checked out.

Detectives are still seeking information on the case and are asking anyone with info to call Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 1-800-458-TIPS.
