Body Discovered in Car Found in Canal: Miami-Dade Police

Police investigating after workers find car containing body submerged in murky canal

Miami-Dade Police are investigating after a body was discovered inside a Honda Civic found in a murky canal Monday morning.

The car was found in a small canal on the 6700 block of Northwest 12th Street – which is also called Perimeter Road – by Richard Garcia, who was cutting grass nearby.

"That's a car in the water, something's not right, that's why I called police," Garcia said.

When divers went in just after 9 a.m., they found a body inside the car. It was unknown how long the car had been in the water.

"He has not been in there that long, we do know that it is a white male approximately 70 years of age,” Miami-Dade Police Det. Robin Pinkard said.

Police said there was no evidence of foul play. Judging by the fresh tire marks on the curb, detectives believe the elderly driver was going westbound on Perimeter Road, when he lost control and veered off the road. His car flipped over, landing in the ditch.

Officials from the medical examiner’s office hauled away the body as traffic homicide detectives searched the car for clues and retraced its possible path Monday afternoon. Pinkard encouraged any drivers who saw anything on Perimeter Road Monday morning to speak with police.

Police are still investigating, and the cause of the crash remains unclear, pending the medical examiner's report, they said.
