Boy, 3, in Near-Drowning in Oakland Park

A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after a near-drowning at a pool in Oakland Park Monday. The incident happened at an apartment building in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Street.

Officials said the boy was playing with his older brother and sister when he wandered off. The teen siblings assumed the boy had run back to their apartment but when they returned, their mother asked where he was.

The boy was found in the deep end of a swimming pool. The incident happened on Greg Johnson’s first day on the job as a maintenance worker. He saw the boy’s lifeless body and started CPR.

“He was limp. I know he was submerged for a little time ‘cause he was real limp. I lifted him up, he was lifeless,” said Johnson. “It was hurtful. It was really, really hurtful because I wouldn’t want anyone to see their child like that.”

Johnson wasn’t supposed to start working at the complex until Tuesday. He said it was a case of being at the right place at the right time.

The boy was rushed to Plantation General Hospital, but his condition has not been released.
