Surfing Instructor Rescues Boy, 11, Struck by Lightning at Daytona Beach

A surfing instructor performed CPR to save the life of an 11-year-old Georgia boy who was struck by lightning in Daytona Beach.

L.J. Kuzmovich says the lightning bolt struck the boy around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon while he was standing in knee-to-waist high water and fishing with his father. Kuzmovich rushed to the boy and started giving him CPR and another instructor helped him count the compressions.

Kuzmovich says within three-and-a-half minutes, the boy started gurgling fluids, then coughing. The Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue arrived soon after.

The weather had been sunny just before the lightning strike, people at the beach told the Daytona Beach News-Journal

“It was just out of the blue,” said Kuzmovich. The only clouds were in the distance, he said.

Captain Tammy Marris says the boy was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with serious injuries.
