Everglades High School

Brag About Your School: Everglades High School

We don’t need to sing the praises of the multiple-award winning Everglades High School vocal ensemble choir.

The kids do that for themselves, and it isn’t even a performing arts magnet program. It’s part of a diverse school that offers something for everyone.

“Our philosophy basically is that we want to make our school marketable for every kind of student," principal Haleh Darbar said. "We want to make sure that every student has an opportunity to come to our school and learn what they’re interested in.”

Interested in becoming a paramedic? Miramar Fire Rescue collaborates with the school in its fire academy-- a three year, one class a day program starting in 10th grade.

Graduates receive level one firefighter certification.

And for the students who are good with their hands, a massive truck comes to the school once a week, the first of its kind anywhere to teach kids how to be auto mechanics.

“It is dual enrollment, it’s called career dual enrollment, and these kids do the exact same things that adults do at the college,” said assistant principal, Laura Cohen.

The students study on computers at school three hours a day, and in the brand-new truck once a week. Graduates get full A.S.E. certification.

Of course, Everglades has a full range of honors and AP classes. The backbone of the school is academics. But these days, schools have to compete for students.

“I am competing with charter schools, the private schools, IB programs, magnet programs, all kinds,” said Darbar.

And next year, they’re adding the Cambridge Program. You could say Everglades High has a harmonious balance, but you’d be preaching to the choir.
