Town Hall Addresses Relationship Between Black Community, Law Enforcement

Community leaders, law enforcement and citizens came together for a town hall Tuesday called "Breathing While Black" to address the relationship between the black community and law enforcement in the country.

The town hall was held at Florida Memorial University and was presented by the South Florida chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ-South Florida). NBC 6 Anchor Jawan Strader moderated the panel and NBC 6 Anchor Trina Robinson took questions from the audience.

Among the panelists was 26-year-old Dyma Loving, who was arrested by Miami-Dade police officers back in March. She and a friend had called police about a neighbor who allegedly pointed a gun at them, but Loving ended up getting arrested herself.

Cellphone footage that has since gone viral show officers aggressively pulling Loving to the ground as he handcuffed her. The officer has since been charged with battery, and Loving is no longer facing charges in that arrest.

Other panelists included FIU Police Captain Delrish Moss, Miami Civilian Investigative Panel's Rodney Jacobs, Jr., BSO Deputies Association President Jeff Bell, activist Phillip Agnew, and Loving's attorney Justin Moore.

Sponsors of the town hall included NBC 6, Florida Memorial University, Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust and Hot 105 FM (Cox Media Group).
