Zachary Cruz, Brother of Accused Parkland Gunman, Arrested for Violating Probation

What to Know

  • Zachary Cruz was arrested on Tuesday in Palm Beach County.
  • A warrant was issued for his arrest following a probation violation.
  • Cruz is the brother of the accused gunman of the Parkland school shooting tragedy.

Zachary Cruz, brother of accused Parkland school shooting gunman Nikolas Cruz, has been arrested, according to jail records.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office records show Zachary Cruz was arrested Tuesday based on an out-of-county warrant. He was being held without bond in West Palm Beach's Main Detention Center.

Court records show the warrant was issued on Tuesday.

The warrant was issued because Zachary Cruz allegedly violated his probation by driving on April 28 without a valid driver license and for going within 25 feet of a parking lot at Lake Worth's Park Vista Community High School.

"Client did violate his probation on 4/28/2018 by Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a Valid Driver's License, to wit: a brown Kia SUV," the warrant reads.

Zachary Cruz in late March pleaded no contest to trespassing on the campus where the deadly rampage happened and was sentenced to time served and six months of probation.

Judge Melinda Kirsch Brown also ordered Cruz to enroll in therapy and wear an ankle bracelet and said he cannot possess firearms or ammunition.

He was released from jail after the hearing but said nothing to reporters as he left.

The 18-year-old was arrested March 19 after police found him skateboarding at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High after school. Administrators previously told him not to come on campus.

Cruz is the younger brother of Nikolas Cruz, who's accused of killing 17 students and staff members at the school on Feb. 14. The Cruz brothers attended Stoneman Douglas but did not graduate.

The judge also said Zachary Cruz must be tested to make sure he isn't consuming drugs or alcohol and must stay at least one mile from the school.

Nikolas and Zachary Cruz have the same biological mother but different fathers. Both were adopted at very young ages by Roger and Lynda Cruz. Lynda Cruz died in November and their father died some years earlier.
