Broward Commissioners to Consider Pot Possession Fine Ordinance

Broward County commissioners are set to discuss a proposed ordinance that would relax penalties for people caught with small amounts of marijuana.

Commissioners will meet Tuesday to discuss the proposal, which would allow police officers to issue a $100 fine instead of filing a criminal charge against someone with 20 grams of marijuana or less.

The proposed civil fine is $100 for the first offense and $250 for repeat violations.

"I believe this is an important issue for Broward County and our residents," Vice Mayor Marty Kiar, who brought the proposal forward, said in a statement. "If passed, it will give good people, who have made a mistake a second chance in life."

If initial approval is given, a public hearing will be set for Oct. 27.

Miami-Dade County, Miami Beach, Hallandale Beach and West Palm Beach have passed similar laws in the past few months.
