Broward Commissioners Decide on Fines for Uber, Lyft Drivers

The Broward County Commission gave its final vote Tuesday on a set of fines for unregistered drivers who operate under ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Fines for a first offense are $250, with a second offense fine of $500. Third offenses will be fines $750 and the fourth will be a $1,000 fine.

The proposed fines were much heftier, with $1,000 a day for a third offense, $5,000 a day for the fourth and $15,000 if a court finds a violation to be irreversible.

In April, commissioners passed an ordinance that requires vehicle inspections, background checks that include fingerprinting and 24/7 insurance that complies with state law for the drivers.

So far, Uber has refused to follow county law and has paid more than $25,000 in fines. Commissioners said they need hefty fines to force Uber to follow the law.
