Broward Teacher Accused of Engaging in Sex Acts With Minor

A man who is a science teacher at a Broward County school is being accused of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.

Venorrice Wells, a 31-year-old science teacher at Dillard High 6-12, was arrested Friday and faces charges of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors and offenses against students by authority figures, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

An arrest affidavit states that Wells engaged in sexual activity with a teenage girl while driving her home from the Boys and Girls Club, where they both work.

The victim told a friend who also works at the Boys and Girls Club what happened with Wells, and the friend reported the incident, according to the affidavit. The victim told detectives that the acts were consensual.

In an interview with investigators, Wells said the victim told him she was 19 years old, according to the arrest affidavit.

He was released from jail on $60,000 bond. A judge ordered him to not have any contact with the victim and to wear a GPS monitor bracelet.

Representatives for Wells denied NBC 6's requests for an interview.

Wells was initially hired at Broward County Public Schools as a substitute back in 2012. He's been a science teacher at Dillard since 2015.

Wells will be reassigned to a work location away from students for the upcoming school year, pending the outcome of the investigation, said Nadine Drew, a spokesperson for BCPS.

Because of his routine interaction with minors, BSO is asking for any additional possible victims to come forward and call Special Victims Unit Det. Ryan Schnakenberg at 954-321-4240. Any anonymous calls can be made to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
