Broward Youth Soccer Coach Accused of Sexual Battery
A well-known Broward County soccer coach is facing multiple charges of sexual battery on a minor, authorities said.
Juan W. Ramos, 43, was arrested in Plantation Thursday and remained behind bars without bond Tuesday, jail records showed.
A Broward County judge denied him bail after reading the police report, which claims a victim in her 20s came forward saying she and Ramos had sex on several occasions between 2003 and 2007, when the victim was a teenager.
In bond court, Ramos' defense attorney argued that Ramos has been working as a school employee and soccer coach at American Heritage and other schools over the last decade, and this is the first allegation against him.
The prosecutor claimed they have a taped confession.
Florida Youth Soccer Association executive director Dale Burke confirmed Tuesday that Ramos has been suspended by the FYSA pending the outcome of the litigation. The Plantation Football Club has also suspended Ramos.
Parents and community members said they were stunned to hear of the allegations.
"I think it's scary. It's a parent's worst fear that the coaches they trust are taking advantage of their kids," Sarah Spurlock said.
